The Mile High City of Denver, Colorado
Denver is a city located in the high plains of Colorado State, with the Rocky Mountains lying to its west. The other cities bordering it are Cheyenne which is about 98 miles to its north and Albuquerque, located some 336 miles to its south. The climate of Denver is generally mild with about 300 days of sunshine annually, although sometimes winters present snow falls which eventually melt quickly. The city has an altitude of 1609 meters above sea Level, which is exactly one mile, and as such it is sometimes referred to as the “Mile High City.”
Denver holds the record for being the city with the biggest park system in the whole of USA. It has 200 parks which are located in the city and 20, 0000 acres of land under parks in the local mountains. Other than parks, the city is also a sports travel destination for sports fanatics, an outdoor events travel destination and an arts and cultural destination. Its people are quite friendly and they take a casual approach in many aspects of their lives, including dress and attitude.
The city is served by the Denver International Airport, which also happens to be among the largest airports worldwide in terms of area. Most ski divers fly to the city via the airport. The Rocky Mountains usually play host to many ski events since the involved resorts are located there.
The Denver State Capitol building is one of those landmarks in the city that stand out from other structures. It is found in the city’s downtown. It has very distinguishable features which include a 24-karat dome which is plated with gold, a granite façade white is white in color and very big pillars found at the entrance. The gold karat symbolizes the days of Gold Rush in Colorado. Visitors can enjoy guided tours around parts of this historical landmark. The Denver Mint is another intriguing tour in Denver, and it is located a mere 1.5 miles from the State Capitol. This is the place where US coins are made, with an average output of 32 million coins per day. The good news to visitors is that they can actually tour take a tour around the facility and learn how the process of making coins works.
Denver is the leading brewery hub in the US in terms of beer production per capita. It is also not so far away in terms of the number of breweries, where it comes in second. No wonder the city’s nickname, “The Napa Valley of Beer,” does not come as a surprise to anyone. The Great American Beer Festival takes place in Denver. The event attracts very many visitors to the city.
Other popular attractions in the city include the Red Rocks Amphitheatre on the Rocky Mountains foothills where dinosaur fossils were found, the Tiny Town, sports attractions and other outdoor activities including cliff diving, and so on.
